For α > 0 the energy is lowest when the dumb-bell is oriented along the z-axis (perpendicular to the rings). For α = 0 the energy will be similar in every orientation. For α < 0 the dumb-bell has the lowest energy when oriented along the xy-plane (parallel to the rings).
